Grant Background:
STOP- Southern Aroostook Tobacco-free Outreach Project is now known as Healthy Aroostook.
STOP, one of the original 13 Healthy Maine Partnerships, has been in existence for 12 years. We have been part of Houlton Regional Hospital almost the entire time. When the last grant ended in July 2007, HRH decided they did not want to reapply due to the cost of carrying the grant.
ACAP applied for the current grant funding for the Central and Southern part of Aroostook County. During the reapplication process, STOP wanted to retain their autonomy. Therefore they asked Vital Pathways if they would assume the fiscal part of the grant and receive the funds from ACAP for the >Southern Aroostook portion of the HMP grant. With the grant starting September 1, 2007 STOP became a subcontract with ACAP to complete the workplan for the Southern Aroostook area under the Vital Pathways umbrella.
STOP employees, Tracy, the HMP Director for Southern Aroostook and Erica, the Youth Coordinator, are employees of Vital Pathways.
Carol Bell is the HMP Director working for ACAP. Martha Bell is the ACAP employee who is part-time HMP grant and part-time District Tobacco Coordinator.
Carol is responsible for the Central Aroostook area while Tracy is responsible for the Southern Aroostook area. We have the same goals to accomplish and although some objectives are different due to the service area, for purposes of the contract they all have to be accomplished by end of the grant year.
Holly Johnson is the School Health Coordinator for SAD 1 and Lynn Brown is the SHC for SAD 29. Erica’s service area is the school districts in the STOP service area. These include Sherman/Katahdin, Benedicta, Southern Aroostook, Hodgdon, and Houlton schools. She also works with the schools in the Central Aroostook area to create uniformity in the program. She is housed in the Mars Hill school which makes commuting much easier since she lives in Mars Hill.
The grant year runs July 1 to June 30.
