The Riverfront Park Which started as a dream and then a bridge has turned into a true success story that was accomplished with help from the community and many volunteer hours.
The bridge to Houlton's Historic Market Square is an architectural design that has caught the eye of many a traveler passing through Houlton who cannot resist stopping to cross the bridge where they discover Houlton's Historic Downtown Market Square. Here you can find many little boutiques and shops to stop in and make a purchase, have a latte, a healthy snack, or just look around.
Through the generosity of community supporters, we have been able to make amazing progress on the development of the Riverfront Park. The community has taken a dilapidated run-down weed and junk infested lot and turned it into a centerpiece for the town.
Now an informational kiosk, picnic area, and a bronze moose welcome you to the Riverfront Park and Trail Head. A riverside trail continues down the river to a stairway leading up to Highland Street.
The Meduxnekeag Riverfront Park and Trail Project, with the connecting Gateway Pedestrian Bridge to Market Square, not only creates a beautiful green space at the entrance to Houlton, but also is an answer to the recreational needs of the community.
Not a day goes by that someone is not walking on the trail, enjoying the view from the bridge, or having their picture taken with the bronze moose.but also is an answer to the recreational needs of the community.
If you are in Houlton, be sure to stop at the park on the North Road (US Route 1) and enjoy the Park. Have a picnic lunch, take a walk down the trail, or cross the bridge to see Houlton's Historic Market Square. You will be glad you did.

A lot has been completed, but there is more to do … we still have bills to pay for the new stairway that allows access to Highland Avenue from the walking trail, and additional Phase II projects include:
- The design & placement of additional story boards along the walking trail
- Pavement of the trail
- Construction of a rain garden (erosion control)
During Phase III we hope to install permanent public restrooms … but all of these enhancements will require additional funding … and we need your help!
