Vital Pathways Works with SAD 29
For the past three years, Vital Pathways has worked closely with SAD 29 to incorporate and enhance natural science education opportunities on the Bird Farm property in Houlton.
The Bird Farm property is a 100+ acre parcel that lies between the Meduxnekeag River and the Houlton High School. The property was owned by the Bird family in the late 1800s and is currently part of SAD 29. For many years, the land was used for studies in agriculture and was actively farmed by students. Today the Bird Farm is a mosaic of maintained fields and forestland. It is used by many groups including students, ATV riders, runners, the Houlton Fair Committee, anglers, and gardeners.
In 2007, Vital Pathways helped SAD 29 secure grant funding through Project Canopy to develop a comprehensive management plan for the Bird Farm property. The intent of the plan is to insure that the Bird farm property is managed to promote natural science education and recreational opportunities for students and the general public. The grant enabled SAD 29 to pay for professional assistance in planning and data collection. Vital Pathways board members also provided a substantial amount of time to help collect field data and to help write specific sections of the plan. The plan was adopted by the SAD 29 school board in 2008 and will guide the management of the Bird Farm property until 2018.
Vital Pathways has also been actively involved in the Outdoor Classroom project at the Bird Farm since early 2008. The outdoor classroom is a 20 ft by 20 ft log structure that serves as a place to start and conduct natural science lessons. The classroom is located just behind the Houlton High School and within walking distance of the community garden. Vital Pathways board members assisted with grant writing for the project and also with the construction of the structure in August 2008. The total value of the completed structure likely exceeds $40,000.00, and it has (so far) been no expense to SAD 29. This project was made possible by very generous donations of material and time from many local businesses and community members. Since completion, the classroom has been used by many science classes, nature walkers, ATV riders, conservation groups, and the general public.
Vital Pathways is committed to increasing and enhancing natural science education opportunities in southern Aroostook County. Given this focus, Vital Pathways will continue to support the great education projects on the Bird Farm property in Houlton.
